History

It all began in 1951 when Josef Nilles founded the Nilles printing company in Trittenheim. With the company's location in one of Germany's most famous wine-growing regions, the Moselle, the line of business was obvious: label printing for the numerous wineries in the region.

Over the next 30 years, Josef Nilles continued to expand his range of printed products and labels were joined by brochures, catalogues, business stationery and much more. In 1979, his sons Theo and Jürgen Nilles take over the print shop. The generational change also led to an expansion of the production facility - production was accelerated and service and quality were optimised.

Just a few years later, the print shop's service was expanded once again: the takeover of Caesar-Verlag in 1995 meant that customers could now be offered a full service with just one contact partner. From design to production, the company now works true to the motto ‘Quality from a single source’.

After a strong trend towards adhesive labels on rolls developed for Theo and Jürgen Nilles in 2003, the brothers expanded their repertoire once again. And with success: the second expansion of the production facility followed in 2006 with a new production hall in Trittenheim. In 2008, James Nilles became the third generation to run the family business. Having recognised the trend towards adhesive roll labels early on in 2003, Druckerei Nilles becomes the first wine label printing company in Germany to produce adhesive roll labels on digital printing systems in 2010 - laying the foundations for a digital (printing) future.

CCL Industries Inc. takes over the Nilles print shop in 2014. With more than 25,000 employees worldwide, the Canadian group is the largest manufacturer of labels in both the B2B and end customer markets. In order to remain loyal to its region and at the same time to the group, the print shop is renamed CCL Label Trittenheim GmbH. The site's wine labelling business is further expanded with the help of generous investments. In addition to CCL Label Trittenheim GmbH, Managing Director and former co-owner James Nilles also manages the etikett.de brand, which is active in the online business, under the umbrella of Avery Europe. Avery is also a division of CCL Industries.

In October 2016, Andreas Wohnlich takes up his position as Managing Director in Trittenheim. With his high standards of production and service quality and over ten years of experience as Managing Director, an expert in wet-glue and self-adhesive labels once again takes the helm of the company. James Nilles will continue his work as Managing Director at etikett.de. After the Nilles family had already set trends in 2003 and 2006, the specialisation in adhesive roll labels followed in 2016. With self-adhesive labels on the roll, from conventional and digital printing, the print shop offers the optimum printing technology for the industry.

More than 70 years after Nilles Druckerei was founded, a lot has happened. In addition to continuous process optimisation and new workflows, CCL Label Trittenheim GmbH expanded its machinery in 2020. The existing machines will be joined by conventional and digital backups. And not without reason, of course: with the expanded machine park, more and more large and well-known brands are now being printed. After 6 eventful and successful years, Managing Director Andreas Wohnlich takes his well-deserved retirement in 2022. His successor is Uwe Refflinghaus, who brings a wealth of technical expertise from his many years in the wine labelling industry.

And now we are looking forward to what is yet to come!
